Understanding NaiMiris: Sri Lankan Scotch Bonnet
NaiMiris (where Nai means Snake and Miris means Chilli) is commonly recognized as the Sri Lankan Scotch Bonnet in the Sinhala language. Many locals, including large-scale manufacturers, often mix up or complicate the terms “Kochchi” and “NaiMiris.” Kochchi refers to the small light green chili (similar to Peri Peri or Piri Piri), but it is quite distinct from Scotch Bonnets.
In Sri Lanka, green naimiris offers a delightful milky, fruity note, whereas red ripe naimiris delivers a bolder and more pronounced fruity taste. The aroma and flavor of these chilies are truly captivating. At Miris, we primarily utilize red ripe naimiris, as they provide the ideal balance of heat and flavor for our products. As part of our policy, we source fresh NaiMiris chilies on a weekly basis without purchasing and freezing them in bulk. This ensures that our products are always 100% fresh.
NaiMiris offers numerous health benefits, and we’ve detailed them in a blog post: Health Benefits of NaiMiris (Scotch Bonnet): The “Hottest Ingredient” in Our Hot Sauces & Jam.
Scotch bonnet chilies have a Scoville scale rating of 100,000 to 300,000 SHU, which measures their pungency or heat. In Sri Lanka, we cultivate both pure breeds of scotch bonnets and hybrid varieties, which are crossbred with Habanero, Trinidad Scorpion, Reapers, and various other types.
STORY OF MIRIS
Hello I’m Shivani Tyronne, my journey with Miris started in a place many of us know well—facing life’s unexpected turns with determination and a dash of creativity. After taking a career break to care for my elder son, I encountered the familiar challenge of gender inequity upon my return. Over 70 companies passed on me, but I didn’t let that dampen my spirit. Instead, I turned it to my passion for creating something truly special.
During the Covid-19 lockdown, I had one of those “aha!” moments. A farmer, doing door-to-door sales, had a hidden gem in his truck—about 500g of NaiMiris chilies. With a shortage of chili powder and fresh chilies, I couldn’t resist scooping them all up. Excited by my spicy score, I shared my first jar of invention on Instagram, not expecting much more than some likes. What happened next was the spark I needed—a former colleague saw the post and requested a sauce made from the chilies. Game on!
I whipped up the first batch using whatever ingredients I had in the kitchen, crafting a sauce with a kick. The response? My colleague loved it and ordered ten more jars!
I am grateful to God for His grace, which has been more than enough in my life to launch a brand that celebrates NaiMiris chilies, lesser-known fruits and traditional ingredients of Sri Lanka that I am truly obsessed about.
And so, Miris by Islandmom was born!
It’s not just about hot sauce; it’s about bringing something fresh and authentic to the table. Our vision is to shine a spotlight on Sri Lanka as a hub for hot sauces, alongside its famous tea, spices, and coconut products. While our mission is to craft bold, flavorful hot sauces that celebrate the goodness of naimiris and empower women by turning up the heat on equity, creativity and community through every bottle we share. With each bottle of Miris, you’re not just tasting a sauce—you’re getting a taste of Sri Lanka’s rich culinary culture, crafted with all-natural, locally sourced ingredients.
Miris is also a celebration of moms everywhere—strong, resilient, and unstoppable. I believe motherhood should never be a barrier to pursuing your dreams. So, join me on this flavorful adventure with Miris! It’s more than just hot sauce; it’s a spicy celebration of passion, resilience, and a taste that’s truly Sri Lankan #naimirisaddict
